Binding Quarks

April 2006

Quarks are commonplace in protons and neutrons, but determining how much space they occupy - their orbits - has been a challenge. Like most quark properties, their orbits depend on the strong force, which is notoriously difficult to calculate. The CLEO-c experiment has recently measured the orbit of the down quark when it is bound to a much heavier charm quark. This result tests new strategies in Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics, a technique for using computers to carry out strong force calculations.
