Professor of Physics, Michael Niemack was recently selected to receive a National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development Program award. The program is described as "a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations."

The award is for his proposal titled "Probing Fundamental Physics and Cosmic Structure by Maximizing the Impact of Next Generation Microwave Surveys." Niemack's experimental astrophysics and cosmology research involves developing new instruments that are used to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) - the remnant radiation from the big bang. This award will support the development of new superconducting detector and microwave optics technologies for next generation microwave observatories as well as analysis of data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and optical observatories to probe the formation and evolution of the universe. The award will also provide research opportunities for underrepresented and underserved students as well as outreach activities with teachers and the public, including the development of short videos about the CMB and ACT measurements.
