Hartman wins DOE Early Career Award

The Department of Energy has announced that Prof. Tom Hartman will receive an award through the DOE Early Career Research Program. This program "supports the development of individual research programs of outstanding scientists early in their careers and stimulates research careers in the disciplines supported by the DOE Office of Science." Hartman's project, "Universality in Quantum Gravity", is one of 44 selected this year from across the Office of Science. Under the award he will study a theory of gravity and quantum mechanics known as emergent spacetime, in which space and time are not fundamental. According to this theory, the three dimensions of space that we observe at everyday distances are built from exotic quantum constituents at very short distances.
