They work side-by-side with faculty, postdocs and other graduate students to define and carry out research, taking advantage of the extensive facilities available at CLASSE and across Cornell. CLASSE is home to one of the largest accelerator physics education programs in the world, with hands-on access to several working accelerators as well as facilities for developing superconducting devices that accelerate partlcle beams to near light speed. The Cornell Electron Storage Ring delivers intense high-energy x-ray beams to the Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), where students in a variety of disciplines work with with CHESS staff to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation in support of scientific research in biology, chemistry, engineering, materials science, and physics. Students in particle and astrophysics work on the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, the muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab, and at the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, and develop theory for general relativity, LHC phenomenology, and the early universe.
