Experimental Methods
in
Elementary Particle Physics

Course Nrs: 6794 (Lectures) and 6810 (Seminar)
Term: Spring Semester 1999
Subject: Applied Physics

Lectures

The physical principles and practical application of modern particle-physics detectors, such as scintillation detectors, proportional wire chambers, drift chambers, electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, and time projection chambers, will be treated using examples from existing experimental facilities. Subjects such as energy loss mechanisms for high-energy particles, measurement resolution, noise, dynamic range, linearity, and readout electronics will be discussed in detail. The introductory lectures serve the purpose of preparing the participants to hold a seminar on a particle detector of their own choice.

Seminar

Following introductory lectures on modern methods of particle detection, the participants will prepare seminars on related topics of their own choice.
