CLEOIII drift chamber ("DR3") construction, March 1996 - April 1999

1999-04-22 Moving Day
Chamber is returned to the floor after securing inner tube on the West.

1999-03-18 : 1999-04-05 install cathodes
Cathodes panels are installed in a 3-step process: preinstall, modify, final install. Cathodes are held with sliding (on one end) brackets. Cables feed through the endplate outer ring.

Wire stringing is complete. One octant has the support frame removed to show the full length of the wires.

1999-03-10 : 1999-03-17 replace all ring-1 sense wires
Sense wires in cake ring-1 are breaking. We determined that the crimp tools had not been fully tuned at that time. The chamber was returned to the horizontal position. All cake ring-1 sense wires were removed. Note in the picture that one can not see the wires in cake ring-1. All of these wires were re-strung, blind.

1999-02-10 for installing cake trimerans, sense tubes, removing back wires
Wire stringing is complete.

1998-10-12 stringing primarily in stereo superlayer 5
This picture is taken from above with a floodlight near the camera. One can see the cell structure. Sense wires appear dimmer than field wires.

This picture is taken from below with a floodlight above.

1998-07-20 started string the stereo section
We are using the manual stringing device

1998-06-16 : 1998-07-20 stringing the cake
Stringing the cake involves a lot of reaching and hang work.
(1) At the top, the operator must reach deap into the cake region.
(2) At the bottom, the operator stands, putting the weight and crimp tool at eye level.
(3) Crimping the crimp-pin at the bottom.
(4) This shows the wires, with 4 (of 8) cake rings completed, about 1998-06-15.
(5) The circuits used for tension measuring are attached.

1998-04-03 : 1998-06-15 stringing the cake
Cake rings-2 through 4 were strung with the robot.
(1) The robot upstairs - one person is watching and guiding while a second person operates the computer controls.
(2) This shows the chamber mounted in the gimmel.

1998-03-16 : 1998-04-02 stringing the cake, ring 1
Cake ring-1 was strung by hand. The photo shows wires in cake ring-1.

1997-12-12 endplates assembled and aligned in the stringing room
(1) The pretension rods are installed. Bushings are being installed in the cake.
(2) The inner tube is a compisite construction of aluminum foil and Rohacell. Total thickness is 0.0012 RL. (Those ugly white stripes are reflections of the overhead lights, not imperfections.)

1997-05-15
(1) Skins are attached while maintaining the geometry.
(2) Endplates are loaded.
(3) Shims are fit to the skins to place the load on the edge piece rather than on the screws. These shims were tune over a period of several days to provide consistant deformation of all skin panels under load.

1997-04-15 ??
(1) The endplates are assembled on the alignment stands with the spreader bars. Load is applied at the center.
(2) From the inside, one can see the heavy steel ring that adds rigidity to the endplate by constrainign the surface at the inner diameter. There are two length measurements. One gives the distance between the endplates due to bowing. The second gives the length of one of the pretension rods, from which we calculate the tension.
(3) The distance between the endplates at the outer radius is maintianed to 0.001 inch.

1996-11-15
Drilling is complete. Plates are inspected at the vendor.

1996-11-01
First holes are drilled in a big plate.

1996-10-21
The third (final) cut of the big plates is completed.

1996-04-
(1)The second cut of the big plates is completed.
(2) Ring-1 of the cake is complete and inspected atthe vendor.

1996-03-
The first cut of the big plates is completed.
