CORNELL LABORATORY FOR ACCELERATOR-BASED SCIENCES AND EDUCATION

Theoretical Astrophysics

The theoretical astrophysics group at CLASSE represents a partnership between the Cornell Physics and Astronomy Departments. Our research focuses on black holes and neutron stars as probes of the physics of strong gravitational fields and elementary particles. We employ numerical simulations of these extreme spacetimes in order to better understand the theory of general relativity, thus allowing us to predict the behavior of exotic objects in the distant cosmos and the early Universe. The need for such predictions is fueled by progress in astronomical experiments, from the growing sensitivity of gravitational wave observatories (such as LIGO and VIRGO) to recent measurements of the cosmic microwave background.
